Juji Uke + Tekubi Gatame. (01:51) 10. Kake Uke + Maegeri. (Today this exercise adds a Jodan Hiji Uchi). (02:10) 11. Juji Uke + Ude Gatame. (02:20) 12. Shuto Uke + Shuto Uchi. (02:39) 13. Juji Uke + Hizageri. (02:51) 14. Shuto Uke + Osae Uke + Uraken. (03:00) 15. Ryote Kake Uke + Ude Gatame. This analysis of Jion completes ignores the embusen of the kata, which tells you which angle to take relative to your attacker, and it also wrongly assumes that you will be attacked at long range by a fellow karateka. The kata were originally created for self-defense against an untrained attacker, and real violence typically occurs at close range. For a more realistic and practical set of bunkai, see Iain Abernethy’s analysis of Jion.

Karate Do is wonderful high impact art. You can train by yourself and or by partners. It’s nice to see some healthy senior citizens can still do it.

I have seen hints of that stiff legged "back kick" movement about a third of the way through. It isn't there the way I learned it, but I have seen odd stiff legged crossing side step at that point. I would love to know the bunkai.
